Exposition Part II

Pfew I feel busy as a little bee. The moment that I can get in to setup my photo’s for the exposition is getting closer and closer and there is lots of work to be done. So what have I done so far:

  • catogorized my pictures and made out of roughly 2500 images a selection of 16 images that I want to place there. And believe me that was a nightmare ! It took me a lot of time and energy to do that because it is so difficult to make that selection.
  • Been to the library to have a look where I am allowed to place my images and it is a nice spot. People will notice them because they have to pass them and they have good light as well which makes me happy
  • Found out that I also want to make a e-book so I can share this work with all of you and I can show more pictures in that as well
  • Been thinking and working on how I can place these images because a frame would be to heavy, but I found a nice solution
  • The publishcity around the exposition has started already
  • Been printing my work which took me a whole evening but I am pretty satisfied with the results of it…..

Sometimes……….

You really have to get back to basics and redesign or adjust what you always did. Forget what you learned to learn that there is a whole other world as well. This is a story about that.

I thought I really knew my way around in Lightroom and Photoshop, but boy was I wrong…..so wrong…..

This weekend a friend of me introduced me into the workflow procedures of Guy Gowan, wow a whole new universe opened up for. I was so lucky to borrow his DVD set and got stunned by the logic behind the whole idea. It is making the whole way of working in Photoshop and you workflow more predictable then ever.

Guy has a background in the traditional Scanner and Print industry and has been for years Adobe’s man to go. So a CV that sounds good very good. In the old days they corrected everything with layers and masks. This is actually exatcly what Guy is doing as well. It is really great, very subtile and controlable and I looooove it

Guy has a very good website and explains in a very clear way how he does his thing. Best thing I think he is also giving you the why he does it and what the idea behind it is. A lot of things I was running into and wanted to get out of my work…..he brought me the solution. Still have to figure a lot of things out, but I am really going to use his methode of working, it is logical very much timesaving and it brings me the quality I need and was looking for …….

Wow….an exposition !!!

Never ever could have imagined that things can go fast, very fast. I recieved a phonecall yesterday from a very friendly lady to ask me if I would agree to set up a exposition in a local public  library. uuuuuuuuuhhhh……what do you think OF COURSE. I know the place since it is the library in the village my parents live and I used to be a member as well when I lived with my parents.

Really it is my first solo exposition and I think it means a lot of work, checking out the space making a floor plan, select images, print images, desicions on how frame them pfew ….but first things first I have to make a list and pay a visit to that place so I know what and how ……

Well everbody I realize it is a sho post this time but I wanted you guys to know what happend !!! Will keep you posted

Three tools I can’t miss

Besides my filters, my cam, my lenses and my tripod there are for me three very import tools I can’t miss while preparing and  shooting landscapes. Just a couple that make my life easier and give me a headstart. Here I will share this with you so that you can think about it and maybe it helps you as well.

  1. A piece of software called The Photographers Ephemeris. This application uses Google Maps and plots in your map the way the sun will light your subject during the day. For me it is mostly just a conformation of my thoughts, but in several cases it showed me that what I thought was a morning location actuallly was a better evening location. If you know the location you can look it up and plot the path of the sun. The application works pretty straight forward and gives you a lot of information. It even tells you when the moon comes above the horizon. And you all know that a good preperation is half the work, so I use it a lot.TPE 1024x541 Three tools I cant miss tips and tricks
  2. My remote control. This is the most important thing since it gives me the possibility to work with my cam and make sure there is no movement while I press the shutter. Really and it doesn’t cost that much. I found in Dealextreme .com a good site for this kind of goodies for under 5 dollar I had one and that is giving me comfort, since I know myself a bit better and longer then today. This is the kind of stuff I always tend to loose.
  3. A hat……This may sound silly but think about it. The human being loses 80% of his bodywarmth through his head. If you talk to outdoorsporters they will confirm this. Besides that the area round your neck and the coat you are wearing are open and start to act like a chimey does so there will a lot of warmth leaving. I have several hats and when I know that I will be out in the elements for a longer time I will wear one. It keeps me warm.

Good Camera equals Good Photographs ???

206 320x240 misty forest Good Camera equals Good Photographs ??? news Hmm I can not count the number of times people tell me…”of course you can take good photographs, you have a pro camera” Yes I have but does that mean that I don’t have to do anything to get good photographs. NOT though a lot of things are done by the camera there are still a lot of things I have to decide. Yes a good camera makes it easier but is no garantee for good photographs. We see in our workshops people with the most expensive camera’s still not knowing the potentail of the camera or switched on to automatic. I am still the one that makes the creative decisions. So to me it is never the camera that take the photo, but the person behind, I have seen people shooting with a Canon 1DS and still make mud and pro’s with a compact and get stunning results.

A lot of magazines tell us that Photography is dead since the camera does all the work nowadays, but really Photography is alive and I am still in control of a lot of things that happen, I will give you a list of things that still are done by me and that makes the photgraph not the camera:

  • Focusing: hardly creative, except when there is a selective focus needed, I have to switch to manual and make a good decision about where to place it and how to do it. This is something a camera can’t do for me.
  • Exposure: You can do it automatcily, but that will give you always the best exposure. If you are in need for a special kind of exposure……switch to manual  and set it
  • Color Balance: same thing,
  • Contrast control: same thing

And you know the list goes on. No in my opinion there is still a lot and Photography is certainly not dead. Think of this Will a camera ever be able to express my thoughts and feelings about what I see. Don’t think so and when it might happen, well personally I think that for me the fun of photographing will be gone very quickly. I started to shoot to be able to express the things that touch me and the atmospheres that provoke feelings in me. That is my challenge and that is what drives me….No photography is not dead, It is alive !!! more then ever !!

The best advice ever

“Always stay close to your own experiences. It’s very important to photograph what you like, not what you dislike.” – Rineke Dijkstra

If you like somebodies photographic work or not is a matter of taste, but advice is universal just like the emotions Rineke Dijkstra is capturing so well. She is right and to me it is the best advice ever given to me. Also a friend of my gave me a advice which was a bit the same and it made me think about me and myself as photographer. Looking back I can tell that it brought me back to earth and to my senses. I was lost my way, my path, my reason for shooting after the first year of my photoschool. Pulled so far awya out of my comfortzone that I didn’t know what to do. I tried to capture everything and all making myself crazy and the frustration grew by the month. I lost my focus and found myself in dispare …. tried to find my new me so to say……

Then my friend told me “Think about the reason why you started photographing, what made you do it and what do you like and who do you like to be as a photographer” and that made think and I can tell it took me a long time and I am still working on it but back again with new focus and a clear goal. I know now what my strengths are and what I like to do, hence the advice of Rineke Dijkstra. And yes I can cleary see the result of a shoot I did like or where I feel connected to. To me there is always a difference and I can see back my own emotions in shoots I could put my emotions in. And more and more I can see what is me and what is not me which makes my work much better and much more touching. And personally I think it is the best advice to give to everybody, do what you like and what is close to you so that you really can walk the path you like and get a good focus on the things you like and want to become. Be aware and selfknowledge is helping you with it a lot ……….
